# Find and merge duplicates

> How Migaru spots accounts and contacts that may be the same, where you review them, and what merging two records keeps, moves and can’t undo.

Mail, meetings and imports can each bring the same company or person in twice. Migaru looks for likely pairs of accounts and of contacts, and asks you about them. It never merges anything by itself.

## What counts as a likely pair

- **Accounts** with the same website, or the same name once “Inc”, “The” and punctuation are set aside.
- **Contacts** with the same email address, or with the same name and either the same account, the same work email domain, or no email address on one of them to tell them apart.

A name or website more than five records share is too common to go by, and is passed over. A workspace is checked for new pairs about every half hour.

## Review them

Likely pairs wait in **Review**, under **Possible duplicates**, each with its reason, such as “Same website, acme.com.” Choose **Not the same** and that pair is never raised again, or **Compare and merge**. A record with a likely twin says so on its Overview tab too.

To merge any two records yourself, of any kind, select exactly two in a list and choose **Merge**, or use **Merge** on a record.

## What a merge keeps

The merge page shows the two side by side, with the one that keeps everything chosen for you: the one with more history, or, if neither has more, the older. Under **Where they differ**, choose which value each field keeps; a field the kept record has empty takes the other’s.

The other record’s links, timeline, files, emails, meetings, commitments, list memberships and sequence enrolments all move to the one you keep, and the other goes to Deleted items. Its email address or website goes on leading to the one you kept, so mail from it is filed there, and its old link opens the kept record. Its open suggestions and share links are dropped.

**A merge can’t be undone.** A merged record shows in Deleted items as merged into the other, and can’t be restored. Anyone in the workspace can merge.

## Stopping them at the door

Adding a contact with an email address, or an account with a website, that another record already has offers to update that record instead. Changing a record’s email or website to one another record has is refused, with a suggestion to merge the two.
